"Well, I Look at Work Like the Bathroom..."

I remember my first "real job" vividly. It was 8 months after college - a job "in my field" with "a real company" in an actual office building and everything!

Everything was new. I had my degree, but I didn't actually know anything about work. Is it better to bring my lunch? What are the unofficial etiquettes of the break room? Why are all the guys wearing ill-fitted golf polos tucked into pleated khakis with cell phone holsters?

Cubicle life went from a Dilbert cartoon to lived reality when I walked over to my manager to ask a question, and then he told me to go back to my desk and emailed me the answer instead of having a conversation.

The honeymoon ended quickly when I had my first difficult conversation with a more tenured co-worker. I had been leaving the office promptly at 5 every day. Seemingly annoyed at this, she told me taking this job seriously meant coming in an hour early and staying an hour late. With all the wisdom of my 23 years of life experience at the time, I replied - "Well, I look at work like the bathroom. You go in, do what you gotta do, and get out as quickly as possible."

Yes, I really made that cringe worthy statement out loud.

Here's the thing. A lot of us have never learned to think and act like a professional. We go through school and college, get degrees, and enter the workforce. During this time, we are used to being top performers - or at the least, above average. We rapidly develop, excel, and progress, but after a few years.. stuff happens.

We see others who are less skilled than us move ahead. We get pigeonholed. We get stuck.

There's a bunch of "things" we should be getting better at but we don't.

Sometimes it's because we don't know how. Communicate better? That's incredibly vague. Be a better collaborator? Ok.. but how? We get lost and the only resources available to use are some canned online training videos that try to teach us how to write better emails. *YAWN*

Other times it's because we feel like we shouldn't have to. Think about the engineer who says things like - "It's not my fault if people can't understand me." Or the hard charging manager who says "I can't help being blunt, that's just my style, get used to it."

People should recognize my abilities, but they don't. Not my fault, right?

This program is designed to get us over that hump.

Simple but Profound Lesson from Dad

While in college, I worked as a Pharmacy Technician at a hospital, and I noticed something that I couldn't wrap my head around.

The road to becoming a Pharmacist is a long one. It takes about 6 years to complete and requires a high level of academic rigor (i.e. good grades). In other words, once someone becomes a Pharmacist it is safe to say they've been a top performer for a long time - top of their class in high school, awesome grades in college, high admission test scores, and so on. Surrounded by others with similar credentials, all of a sudden, they were middle of the pack. They simply became one of a dozen people with the exact same skill-set and qualifications. They became a commodity

And yet, there was clearly a hierarchy. There was the person who everyone hated working with. There was the person everyone loved working with. There was one person who couldn't hold a job for more than 1-2 years because they kept having a falling out with their employer. And there was the person who had been there 20 years, and everyone was willing to bend over backwards to keep them from leaving.

My dad has been a hospital pharmacy director for over 30 years, so I asked him why this was. Aren't all of these people supposed to be top performers? Why are some of them so terrible? He said at a certain point in your career, the actual technical skills relevant to your job no longer differentiate you. It's the interpersonal skills. It's a matter of how much people actually like working with you, not whether you're 10% better at your job than someone else. This is the 'stuff' we know as soft skills.

We spend so much time, especially early on, cultivating those technical skills and hard skills. The soft stuff we dismiss, or assume some people are just better at it than we are. How do you really improve at the soft skills, especially if they don't come naturally to you? How do you tangibly identify, understand, develop, and apply a soft-skill like leadership, empathy, communication, decision making, mindset, productivity, or emotional intelligence?

Put it another way. After years of blending in with everyone else at work, what can you do over the next 12 months to make you truly stand out? And what have you actually done over the last 12 months? It's time to bridge that gap.

“You will be the same person in five years as you are today, except for the people you meet and the books you read.” -Charlie 'Tremendous' Jones

Take a Look, It's in a Book!

When asked how to get smarter, Warren Buffett once held up stacks of paper and said “read 500 pages like this every day. That’s how knowledge builds up, like compound interest” (Farnam Street, "The Buffett Formula").

True professionals dedicate themselves to honing their craft. A painter paints. A writer writes. A consultant makes pivot tables. An athlete goes through thousands upon thousands of repetitions to build habit, muscle memory, and instinct.

...What does a knowledge worker do?

We tend to delude ourselves into thinking we’re smarter than ever before. If we come across something we don’t know, we simply Google it. A few articles and short videos later, we have a functional level of knowledge about a subject. The problem is, everyone is able to rapidly acquire this level of knowledge. That means there is no longer anything differentiating you from millions of others. The ability to access information is no longer rare.

We’ve all heard the saying that with age comes wisdom. Yet, we all know plenty of people who have aged but have not grown. You can show up to work daily and perform the same task – you might become a bit more efficient, but without intentional effort you will not grow. 10 years of experience is really 1 year multiplied by 10. How much of our careers have passed us by without us actually growing?

What is our craft and how is it mastered? What is our true expertise? How do we ensure our skillset is relevant in a rapidly changing landscape? How do we prepare ourselves to work jobs that don't yet exist?

In such a world, it will become imperative to have the ability to stand out, to have a way of bridging technical skills with the soft skills. In an era where the playing field is level, and anyone can quickly learn anything, the skill that is rare is the ability to develop new insights. It is to see things others don't, communicate them in a way others can't, and lead a team of people to the finish line that others are unable to.

This requires deep thought and contemplation. It requires the ability to go many levels deeper than the superficial (or functional level) that many are content with. If you can go deeper on ideas, and cross-pollinate those ideas with other ones to create new insights – all of a sudden you make yourself infinitely more valuable

A lot of people simply don’t read. Many of them don’t read a lot. And even fewer read with the intention of leading and uncovering insights, applying them, and developing new perspectives. The rarer the skill, the more valuable it is.

“If we encounter a man of rare intellect, we should ask him what books he reads.” –Ralph Waldo Emerson

The Single Most Important Thing You Can Do For Your Career

Reid Hoffman, the founder of LinkedIn, was asked: “What’s the most important thing people can do daily for their careers?”

His response was that the most important thing a person can do every day is to invest in yourself. In particular, how are you better at the end of the day than you are at the beginning of the day?

What if you were an athlete who didn’t train? If you went and played, you would lose to the people who did train.

To do this, figure out what you need to know, and how do you make yourself better? What are the things you need to know in order to be a better professional everyday.

He said, “That’s the thing to think about everyday.”

  • So how do you actually identify the skills you need?
  • What does the road ahead look like?
  • Once you see that road, how do you start to learn those skills?
  • And once you start learning those skills, how do you balance the rest of your life – which is already jam packed – with trying to get ahead?

The SmartBox program is the answer.

How much longer are you willing to wait to develop the skills you know you need? To take action to develop that habits that will set you up for a lifetime?
